A Solution for Those Not Eligible for Laser Correction
For patients who are not eligible for laser vision correction, we offer procedures within Lens Surgery:
Structure and Function of the Eye Lens
This involves removing the patient’s natural lens and replacing it with an advanced artificial lens that corrects the vision defect. This procedure is recommended for patients with severe hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism, and in some cases, myopia.
During refractive lens exchange, it is possible to use a lens individually selected for the specific patient’s needs:
- Multifocal lenses (trifocal, multifocal, EDOF) – provide very good visual acuity for distance, near (35-40 cm), and intermediate distances (60-90 cm).
- Toric monofocal lenses – eliminate astigmatism, providing sharp vision for either distance or near.
- Toric multifocal lenses – eliminate astigmatism, providing sharp vision for distance, near, and intermediate distances, thus offering the possibility of complete independence from corrective glasses.
Replacing the natural lens is also the only method for treating cataracts. During cataract surgery, not only myopia or hyperopia can be corrected, but also astigmatism and presbyopia. When choosing PREMIUM lenses, in addition to cataract removal, the patient can expect very good visual acuity for distance, near (35-40 cm), and intermediate distances (60-90 cm).

Phakic lenses – effective correction of significant vision defects without removing the natural lens. Phakic lens implantation is a solution primarily addressed to patients with high myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. However, phakic lenses do not correct presbyopia (age-related farsightedness), which is the loss of the eye’s accommodative ability caused by the gradual hardening and decreased elasticity of the natural lens due to physiological wear.
Phakic lens implantation does not involve the removal of the natural lens. An artificial lens is implanted into an eye with a transparent natural lens (i.e., a lens that is not clouded, as in cataracts, and retains its physiological properties), ensuring excellent vision quality. After phakic lens implantation, the patient no longer needs to wear corrective glasses or contact lenses.
EVO Visian ICL lenses belong to the group of phakic lenses, which are implantable contact lenses used as an addition to the eye’s natural lens. They are distinguished, among other things, by the high biocompatibility of the material from which they are made – ICL (collagen) – and high safety even with thin corneas.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What procedures does lens surgery at SwissLaser cover?
For patients who are not suitable for laser vision correction, we offer implantation of EVO Visian ICL phakic lenses and refractive lens exchange (RLE). Phakic lenses can correct even severe refractive errors without removing the natural lens, while RLE involves replacing your own lens with a modern implant. Lens exchange is also the only method of treating cataract.
Phakic lens or lens exchange – which method should I choose?
Phakic lenses (ICL) are a solution primarily for patients with high short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism – the natural lens remains in the eye and retains its properties. Refractive lens exchange, on the other hand, is recommended for people with severe long-sightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism, because phakic lenses do not correct presbyopia. The final choice of method is made after detailed examinations and a consultation with the doctor.
How does the assessment for lens surgery work?
The foundation is a comprehensive suitability assessment (costing PLN 400), during which we evaluate your refractive error, the anatomical parameters of your eye and your general health. On this basis, the doctor determines whether phakic lens implantation or refractive lens exchange is the better option. Every patient receives individual recommendations tailored to their health and the type of lens planned.
How much does lens surgery cost at SwissLaser?
Both implantation of the Visian ICL EVO/EVO+ phakic lens and refractive lens exchange with a Premium implant (spherical, toric or Customized) cost PLN 11,000 per eye. The procedures are performed at our clinics in Warsaw and Krakow. NFZ (Poland’s national health fund) does not reimburse these procedures; we offer payment in instalments through Santander Consumer Bank.
Does lens surgery also correct astigmatism?
Yes – during refractive lens exchange, monofocal toric lenses can be used, which eliminate astigmatism and provide sharp vision at distance or near. Toric multifocal lenses are also available, providing sharp vision at all distances and the possibility of becoming completely independent of glasses. ICL phakic lenses are likewise available in toric variants.
I am not suitable for laser vision correction – is lens surgery for me?
Very often, yes. Lens surgery is designed precisely for patients for whom laser correction is not possible – for example because of a refractive error that is too high, a cornea that is too thin, or other corneal changes. EVO Visian ICL lenses stand out for the high biocompatibility of their material and their safety even with thin corneas.
