Cross-linking – Keratoconus Treatment

CROSS-LINKING (named after the effect it produces) – also known as corneal collagen cross-linking or CXL – stiffens the cornea and increases its mechanical resistance. Corneal stiffening is achieved by increasing the number of bonds between the collagen fibers that constitute it. This occurs under the influence of UVA radiation on the cornea. To enhance the sensitivity of the superficial corneal layers to UVA radiation, the cornea is saturated with a special photosensitizing substance, riboflavin (vitamin B2). Clinical studies confirm that the action of riboflavin contributes to slowing or halting the disease, and in some cases, its regression. This procedure can therefore help avoid a corneal transplant.
