Refractive Lens Exchange – An Alternative to Laser Vision Correction, and More

Refractive lens exchange, or RLE (refractive lens exchange), involves removing the patient’s natural lens and replacing it with a technologically advanced artificial lens that corrects the vision defect. However, modern artificial intraocular lenses can be selected in such a way that they correct not only refractive errors, commonly known as vision defects, but also other conditions.

Corneal dystrophies

Dystrophy is a condition in which the growth of tissues or entire organs is impaired due to developmental abnormalities, infectious or metabolic diseases, allergies or poor nutrition. In extreme cases, dystrophy can lead to atrophy, that is, a gradual decrease in the volume of a tissue or organ or even its disappearance.

Can laser vision correction or cataract removal be covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, nothing has changed for years: laser vision correction is not reimbursed by the Polish National Health Fund, nor is it possible to buy private health insurance that would cover this type of surgical intervention in the eye. Not only that – even private insurance that covers recovery from surgery does not have laser vision correction on the lists of surgical procedures covered.

Beat cataracts!

Let’s be clear: cataract is a degenerative disease that we can’t stop or cure pharmacologically. However, we can perform an ophthalmologic procedure that is quick, safe and effective, which will restore our vision. Cataracts do not need to be feared – you need to know enough about cataracts to catch the heralding symptoms in time, go to the doctor and remove the cloudy lens once and for all. The implanted artificial lens will not become cloudy – the removed own lens will not grow back. Thus, there is no risk that the cataract will return.
