Laser vision correction – what is it and where is it best performed?
Laser vision correction is nothing more than the correction of vision defects using laser refractive surgery methods and techniques. This is currently the safest and most empowering way of interfering with the eyeball. In a nutshell, it involves shaping the front surface of the cornea with a laser, leading to the removal of the vision defect. Treatments take 15-20 minutes, and within a few hours to a few days patients regain perfect vision. The rapid development of ophthalmic techniques makes laser eye surgery a procedure that is as safe as possible (the number of complications is less than 1% of cases), painless, and offers the possibility of almost immediate return to normal daily functioning.
Depending on the vision defect being operated on, the cornea in the center of the eye is either flattened (in nearsighted patients) or convexed (in farsighted patients). Laser vision correction also includes cases of astigmatism – the aim of the procedures is to properly model/align the central surface of the cornea with a laser beam so that it focuses the image precisely on the retinal surface. Laser intervention is also carried out in cases of presbyopia (so-called presbyopia farsightedness). Not only that: the latest surgical technologies make it possible to combine surgery for short/far/near-sightedness with simultaneous removal of other visual defects, such as astigmatism.
Laser vision correction is also possible for high vision defects and complicated defects. One of the most important conditions for undergoing laser correction is a sufficiently thick cornea. The doctor also always checks many other anatomical conditions of the eye and our general health. In each case, the decision about the procedure itself and the specific method that will be performed is made individually for each patient on the basis of a qualifying examination and interview conducted by the doctor and/or optometrist.
It can be said that laser vision correction is certainly the most individualized medical procedure in modern ophthalmology!
Thanks to state-of-the-art lasers, defects ranging from +4.0 to -10.0 diopters and up to 6 diopters of astigmatism can be removed during a single treatment.
What does laser vision correction provide?
First of all, laser vision correction makes the patient regain full visual comfort. We can free ourselves once and for all from the need to wear corrective glasses or contact lenses. At last, we have falcon vision!
For someone who has been juggling corrective glasses and contact lenses for many years, such a radical change is like regaining freedom. Now you can really feel the changes in all areas of life: in performing daily routines, in sports activities and in your career.
Yes, it is true that sometimes it is necessary to correct the vision defect, that is, to perform one more procedure. But this only happens in individual cases, such as when laser vision correction is performed on an unstabilized defect.
If the operation follows the procedures, is performed by an excellent refractive surgeon using state-of-the-art equipment, the risk of complications is less than 1% of the cases, and a correction of the defect will not be necessary in the future. However, should something go wrong, in many laser methods there is the possibility of surgical re-intervention. So there is no fear that you will be left alone with a badly operated eye! Not only that: if you opt for laser vision correction when you’re young, you’ll be able to get laser treatment for presbyopia or cataracts years later without any problems.
