From a medical perspective, it’s simple: the substances in hair dyes do not interfere with the laser we use to reshape your cornea. The chemicals remain on your hair and scalp, so they do not disrupt the surgery itself in any way. You can therefore comfortably sit in the hairdresser’s chair and enjoy a new color on your way to the procedure.
Last call for roots: When is the best time to visit the hairdresser?
If you want to get it out of the way, visit the salon about 2-3 days before your appointment at Swisslaser. This will give you peace of mind for the next few weeks, when your eyes will need maximum protection from dust, shampoo water, or irritating fumes.

Here, we must be a bit more restrictive. Remember that recovery is a time when your cornea is “settling” into its new shape and rebuilding its natural barrier. Laser vision correction itself is a precise process that requires calm after the procedure.

This is our most important rule: under no circumstances should you rub your eyes! Dr. Victor Derhartunian often repeats:
“Most post-operative problems do not result from the laser’s work, but from mechanical injuries that patients inflict upon themselves by rubbing their eyes. Hair dye can make your eyelid or scalp itch, and then you instinctively touch the area around your eyes. The risk of corneal flap displacement in the first few days is simply too high.”
The trap of sudden allergy – what if the dye causes an allergic reaction now?
Surgery is always a challenge for the body. Even if you haven’t been allergic to hair dye before, an allergic reaction on your head right after the procedure is the last thing you need. Treating such an allergy requires medication that may interact poorly with your eye drops.

We want your eyes to heal in a “clean” and safe environment. Only then will we achieve the ideal correction effect.
Dangerous interactions: When allergy medications meet antibiotic drops
After the procedure, you diligently apply the drops prescribed by your doctor. If the hair dye causes an allergy, we will have to introduce additional medications. Mixing so many substances in the conjunctival sac is a direct path to irritation and unnecessary prolongation of recovery.

1. How long exactly do I have to wait to dye my hair after surgery?
Give yourself at least 14 days. After this time, your cornea will be stable enough that any fumes or a drop of water will not harm it.
2. What about washing your hair at the hairdresser’s?
You can do it, provided that water and shampoo have absolutely no contact with your eyes. The safest way is to wash your hair with your face tilted far back.
3. Is henna for eyebrows safer?
Unfortunately, no. Postpone eyebrow henna just like hair dye – for about 2 weeks. It is applied directly above the healing eye, so the risk of irritation is enormous.
4. What should I do if dye gets into my eye?
Most importantly: do not rub! Rinse the eye thoroughly with artificial tears (preservative-free, if possible) and call us immediately at the Swisslaser clinic.
5. Can I use hairspray?
In the first week, it’s better to avoid spray cosmetics. Hairspray particles settle on the eye and can cause painful “stinging” that you’d prefer to avoid.
