SmartSight – a global innovation in laser vision correction with the microlens method using the Schwind Atos femtosecond laser

SmartSight is a state-of-the-art treatment with the SCHWIND ATOS® femtosecond laser, belonging to the so-called. free(without flap) methods. They rely on the fact that inside the intact cornea is created a so-called “corneal”. lenticula (a thin section of the lens in the cornea). A minimally invasive incision is then made for the approach. The intraocular lens can then be removed through this small opening. It is also possible to use the so-called. Static cyclorotation compensation.

SmartSight – is a method in which all parameters are individually adjusted and planned based on the unique physical properties of each patient’s eye.

Minimal intervention in the tissue – maximum precision of the procedure

Because the interference with corneal tissue is so minimal, the precision of the SmartSight procedure is incomparably greater than with other laser interventions. The procedure is performed with an extremely fast femtosecond laser, and the patient can see perfectly almost immediately after the procedure and can return to their life activities even the next day.

Importantly, from the patient’s point of view, microlens methods of vision correction, and thus also the SmartSight method, involve the creation of an additional microlens inside our eye. Here we are not dealing with an implant, but with making the lens from our own tissues, which eliminates the risk of rejection or serious complications.

No mistakes, no pain

In the SmartSight procedure, the femtosecond laser SCHWIND ATOS® creates a predefined lens in the corneal interstitial tissue and makes small circumferential incisions in the upper corneal layer (without cutting the corneal surface) for lens access.

After using the laser, the surgeon, looking through the microscope built into the SCHWIND ATOS® device, can easily remove the lens through minimal incisions. The use of so-called static cyclorotation compensation, an intelligent eye-tracking system, significantly increases the precision of the procedure performed, giving the patient an unprecedented sense of maximum comfort and safety. All the above-mentioned advantages make the correction of vision defects – and especially the treatment of astigmatism – much simpler and at the same time more precise than when using other methods.

The risk of error in the SmartSight method is absolutely minimal. Saving the patient’s tissue translates directly into a shorter recovery period and but also significantly increases comfort in the first days after surgery.

Those operated on using the SmartSight method do not experience pain either during or after the procedure. The patient can return to their daily activities the next day and full visual acuity is achieved a few days after the procedure.

The SmartSight method works well for the correction of myopia up to minus 10 diopters and astigmatism up to 5 diopters – including mixed astigmatism and astigmatism that cannot be corrected by other methods. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia (drops). After it is completed, it takes about 30 minutes of rest, then the eyes are inspected using a special slit lamp. After receiving a set of drops and recommendations for their use, the patient returns home. Post-surgery recommendations do not differ from those for other methods: intense exercise, applying makeup and swimming in pools, using a sauna or tanning bed should be avoided.

Advantages of the SmartSight method

Refractive correction in the SmartSight method is performed entirely with the SCHWIND ATOS leset. The patient can remain in one position during all stages of treatment. This results in fast treatment with high comfort for the patient and surgeon. SmartSight is a precise and gentle method of vision correction, used both in private practice and in clinical settings. With pulse frequencies of up to 4 MHz, specific pulse characteristics and positioning algorithms, this SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser provides a very short surgical intervention time. In addition, lenses and flaps made using it have a homogeneous surface. As a result, lens extraction is quick and uncomplicated.

Among the undeniable advantages of the SmartSight method are:

  • Safety thanks to intelligent eye-tracker and static cyclorotation compensation: the system tracks the parameters of the eyeball to set the correction profile perfectly where it should be, and any changes caused by the patient’s positioning are automatically compensated by the laser,
  • Precise treatment thanks to accurate centering, even with higher and mixed astigmatism,
  • Tissue savings from optimized lens geometry,
  • Eliminating the risk of rejection or serious complications – with the SmartSight method, we have to deal with making the lens from our own tissues,
  • Minimal risk of error,
  • Saving the patient’s tissue translates directly into a shorter recovery period,
  • No pain during or after the procedure,
  • Ability to return to daily activities the very next day after the procedure
  • Regaining full visual acuity a few days after the procedure.
