SmartSight is a modern femtosecond laser treatment belonging to the so-called “no flap” methods. They rely on the fact that a so-called lenticula (a thin piece of lens in the cornea) is created inside the intact cornea. A minimally invasive incision is then made for the approach. The intraocular lens can then be removed through this small opening. It is also possible to use so-called static cyclorotation compensation.
In the SmartSight procedure, the SCHWIND ATOS® femtosecond laser creates a predefined lens in the corneal interstitial tissue and makes small circumferential incisions in the upper corneal layer (without cutting through the corneal surface) for lens access. After using the laser, the surgeon, looking through the microscope built into the SCHWIND ATOS® device, can easily remove the lens through the minimal incisions.
SmartSight does not require the creation of a corneal flap (flap), and there is no need for laser ablation as with excimer lasers – excimer lasers, which are responsible for correcting vision defects, belong to the group of non-thermal lasers; they provide the energy necessary to break molecular bonds, so the tissue is effectively vaporized – we get rid of it through ablation, not burning.
The SmartSight procedure can be used to treat myopia as well as astigmatism. Refractive correction is performed entirely with SCHWIND ATOS. The patient can remain in one position during all stages of treatment. This results in fast treatment with high comfort for the patient and surgeon.
