The other one rings, but they ignore it, deeming it unimportant. That’s how Visual Impairment works, or medically speaking – Amblyopia. It’s the most common reason why visual acuity decreases, especially in children and adolescents! Even though the eye looks great and is healthy, the brain simply rejects it. Here at Swisslaser we know that Amblyopia is not a defect of the eye, but an error in the complex communication along the brain–eye axis. That’s why early intervention and a professional approach are absolutely essential – every day counts!

What will you learn from the text below?

What exactly is this whole visual impairment thing?It’s a condition in which the eye sees poorly, even though there is no disease-related damage and the optician has given you the best possible correction.

What most often causes the eye to become “lazy”?Most often the culprit is strabismus, a large difference between the eyes (anisometropia), or simply high astigmatism.

Why won’t glasses alone change anything here?Optical correction won’t help, because the problem lies in your head – the brain processes the signal incorrectly, not the eye sending it incorrectly.

How does strabismus “trick” the brain?When one eye drifts, the brain favors the other one, and then remembers and reinforces that worse, shifted image as the only correct one.

What needs to be done to cure Amblyopia?First, remove any obstacle, and then proceed to specialized vision training, namely pleoptic and orthoptic therapy.

What Is Visual Impairment (Amblyopia)?

Definition and characteristics of visual impairment

Let’s say it straight: Amblyopia is a situation when your eye isn’t working at full capacity, even though it’s physically healthy. Visual acuity is low – in one eye, or less commonly, in both – and no optician will fit you with glasses that will completely fix it. This is a functional deficit, the result of the brain not learning in childhood to correctly use the signals from that particular eye.

What is not a cause of amblyopia? (Absence of pathological changes)

We must emphasize this: When we talk about Amblyopia, we’re not talking about cataracts, glaucoma, or nerve damage. Sure, sometimes these problems occur, but visual impairment is that case when there simply is no pathology. The problem lies in the software (brain), not in the hardware (eye).

Who is the author of the text and publication date?

We rely on the solid knowledge and experience of our specialists. Listen to what one of them has to say on this topic:

Statement by Dr. Victor Derhartunian:

“Visual impairment is not something that will go away on its own. It’s a clear alarm signal! When the brain starts ignoring one eye, the visual system goes into emergency mode. Let’s remember: we may have state-of-the-art equipment for laser vision correction, and of course, it will improve the eye’s optics. But that procedure won’t improve the brain’s function! And it’s the cooperation of the brain and the optical apparatus that determines how well you see.”

Main Causes of Visual Impairment

Rare and primary causes of visual impairment

Sometimes Amblyopia appears because insufficient light reaches the eye. This “obstacle” is created by, for example, congenital cataract, corneal diseases, or some injuries. These are factors that physically block vision.

Most common factors causing amblyopia

Most often, however, Amblyopia is caused by these two main problems:

Strabismus:The eye muscles don’t work in full balance, the eye “drifts,” and the brain prefers to ignore the confused signal.

Anisometropia:You have a large difference in power between the eyes. This most often happens when one eye is very hyperopic (farsighted), and the other has a minimal defect. This is the silent killer of sharp vision.

Astigmatism as a cause of binocular visual impairment

High and uncorrected astigmatism can also cause trouble. In a small child it can lead to both eyes seeing poorly, because the brain has never experienced a perfectly sharp image on the retina.

The “Lazy Eye” Mechanism: Brain–Eye Cooperation

Errors in brain–eye communication and the phenomenon of competition

When the brain receives two different images – one good, the other blurred or shifted – what does it do to avoid going crazy? It rejects the worse one! This is the moment when the eyes start competing, and the brain favors the “better player.” It’s a lightning-fast process of learning… poor vision.

Consequences of incorrect eye alignment (Strabismus)

When the eye is misaligned, the image that should land on the fovea (the central point of the retina) lands somewhere off to the side, on the periphery, where there are few photoreceptors. The brain immediately “remembers” this. And you know what’s worst? Even if the strabismus is later cured, the brain will still perceive that old, imperfect image as the only correct one for a long time.

Mechanism of visual impairment development in anisometropia

In the case of anisometropia, the situation is simple: one eye had it easier in life and “worked for two,” while the other got lazy. Even when you correct that weaker eye, the brain still sticks to its habit – it still processes that old, worse signal. Why? Because it processes it incorrectly, even though the image on the retina may already be perfect!

Limitations and Possibilities of Correcting Visual Impairment

Methods that will not correct visual impairment (Glasses, Squinting, Lighting)

Did you think that better lenses would be enough? Unfortunately, Amblyopia has a neurological basis, so:

Glasses or contact lenses alone won’t solve the problem.

Squinting or better lighting won’t affect what your brain is doing.

Why is laser vision correction not the solution?

Laser is a fantastic tool that will bring the eye to optical perfection. It will eliminate the refractive error! But it won’t reprogram your brain. You can’t expect LVC to magically fix Amblyopia. It creates excellent conditions for treatment, but you have to do all the work on signal processing yourself, under the guidance of a specialist.

Importance of early intervention and therapy (After removing the obstacle)

Key words: the sooner, the better. The most important period of vision development is early childhood. We must force the brain to use that weak eye!

Pleoptic and orthoptic therapy:This is intensive vision training, often with occlusion of the strong eye (so-called penalization). Thanks to this, the brain must finally turn on that ignored phone!

Oculomotor exercises and convergence/accommodation training:We teach the eyes how to work as a duo again, how to support each other.

At Swisslaser Clinics we not only diagnose, but also guide you through the entire vision therapy process. And if a refractive error is an obstacle, we correct it so that therapy makes sense! Remember, proper diagnosis is the first step to sharp vision.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Visual Impairment

Can visual impairment be cured in an adult?

It’s more difficult, because the brain is no longer as plastic as in a child. But it’s not impossible! Thanks to very intensive and consistent therapies, we are able to achieve improvement in visual acuity and, importantly – learn better binocular vision. However, this requires great determination.

How long does treatment for visual impairment take?

Treatment time is like a marathon, not a sprint. It all depends on how large the defect is and how old the patient is. In children it usually takes from several months to even several years. You must be patient and consistent!

I have visual impairment. Can I undergo laser vision correction?

Yes, you usually can. Visual impairment is not a contraindication. LVC is a great tool that will remove the refractive error, thus creating optimal conditions for your eye. But remember – you have to reprogram your brain with exercises!

What exactly is this “penalization”?

Penalization is a trick that forces the brain to work. It involves covering the healthy eye (e.g., with a special patch) or deliberately worsening vision in it with drops. Thanks to this, the brain has no choice and must start using that other, “lazier” eye.

{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@graph": [
  {
   "@type": "MedicalWebPage",
   "@id": "https://swisslaser.pl/blog/niedowidzenie-amblyopia-przyczyny/#medpage",
   "url": "https://swisslaser.pl/blog/niedowidzenie-amblyopia-przyczyny/",
   "name": "Niedowidzenie (amblyopia) - przyczyny",
   "description": "Amblyopia jest obniżeniem ostrości wzroku w jednym oku - rzadziej w obu oczach - mimo braku zmian patologicznych w gałce ocznej i drodze wzrokowej oraz przy optymalnej korekcji",
   "inLanguage": "pl-PL",
   "isPartOf": {
    "@id": "https://swisslaser.pl/#website"
   },
   "reviewedBy": {
    "@id": "https://swisslaser.pl/#victor"
   },
   "lastReviewed": "2026-09-03",
   "breadcrumb": {
    "@id": "https://swisslaser.pl/blog/niedowidzenie-amblyopia-przyczyny/#breadcrumb"
   }
  },
  {
   "@type": "FAQPage",
   "@id": "https://swisslaser.pl/blog/niedowidzenie-amblyopia-przyczyny/#faq",
   "inLanguage": "pl-PL",
   "mainEntity": [
    {
     "@type": "Question",
     "name": "Czy da się wyleczyć niedowidzenie u osoby dorosłej?",
     "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "To jest trudniejsze, bo mózg nie jest już tak plastyczny jak u dziecka.
