Although the surgery itself is routine for us, the choice of your intraocular lens (IOL) is extremely important and highly personal! Made from advanced materials, these small wonders will determine whether your glasses end up in the bin. Remember: there is no objectively “best” lens – there is only the one that perfectly suits your lifestyle and what you enjoy doing. At Swisslaser in Warsaw and Krakow, we take this choice very seriously, because we know it’s a decision for years to come.

What will you learn from the text below?

Why do I suddenly need to consider lens replacement? Most often, this happens when you are threatened by cataracts (the lens becomes cloudy) or presbyopia (the lens stiffens), and sometimes other vision defects are added.

What lens options do I have? You have standard, monofocal lenses, but also super-modern multifocal (trifocal/EDOF) and toric lenses that correct your astigmatism.

Can the lens protect my eyes like a shield?Yes, the new generation of implants has UV and blue light filters, which act like a bodyguard for your retina, protecting against diseases such as AMD.

What is this cosmic technology with two lenses? If your vision defect is really significant (ametropia), we can implant two lenses – one reinforcing the other – to achieve maximum precision.

Is it true that you have to get used to better lenses? That’s right! Multifocal lenses require your brain to undergo neuroadaptation – it’s like learning a new, better vision map. This usually takes one to three months.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) – Individual Choice and Fundamentals

Why Do We Replace Our Natural Lens?

This is most often a problem for seniors, as advanced age takes its toll. Number one? Progressive cataracts – your natural lens simply becomes cloudy. If we do nothing about it, you may even lose your sight. Number two is presbyopia, which is the stiffening of the lens. This is why you suddenly lose sharp near vision. And what if you have both cataracts and astigmatism? No problem! Lens replacement solves these issues in one go!

Definition and Structure of Modern IOLs

What exactly is an IOL? It is a plastic implant designed to perform better than your natural lens. It is constructed with a central circular part and two clever, lateral arms – haptics. What are these arms for? To keep the lens perfectly stable in its place. And the icing on the cake: thanks to foldable lens technology, we insert them through a tiny, 2-millimeter opening. Quick procedure, quick healing!

Types of IOLs – From Standard to Premium

Standard Monofocal Lenses

These are our basic models, sometimes called “enhancers.” You should know that they provide sharp vision at only one focal point (usually distance). You have a choice between spherical lenses (which can distort images at the edges) and aspherical lenses (which minimize this problem). Important practical information: only standard monofocal lenses are reimbursed by the National Health Fund (NFZ).

Multifocal Lenses (Trifocal/Multifocal and EDOF)

This is where the fun begins! Multifocal lenses, such as popular trifocal and modern EDOF lenses, give you super-sharp vision both far and near (35-40 cm), as well as at intermediate distances (60-90 cm). They work like the best progressive glasses, but they are inside your eye! However, remember one thing: you must give your brain time for neuroadaptation. This doesn’t happen overnight; it takes one to three months.

Toric Lenses and Astigmatism Correction

If you have astigmatism, you don’t have to worry! We have toric lenses that eliminate it during surgery. You can choose between monofocal toric lenses (sharp vision for distance or near) or multifocal toric lenses (sharp vision everywhere – far, near, intermediate). This is truly a brilliant way to get a double benefit!

Additional Functions and Advanced Lens Technology

Retinal Protection – UV and Blue Light Filters

Your natural lens is an excellent filter. We copy and improve upon this! Modern IOLs can have a UV filter and a blue light filter. Why is this important? Because blue and UV light damage the retina and accelerate diseases, e.g., AMD. By choosing an implant with a filter, you provide yourself with the best vision contrast and real eye protection for the future.

Innovations: Accommodative Lenses and Ametropia Correction

Science is advancing rapidly! Although we are still working on it, the accommodative lens is the future – an implant designed to recreate the natural movement of the lens, giving you full sharpness for near, intermediate (computer, dashboard), and distance vision.

And what if your vision defect is severe (ametropia)? We take an unconventional approach and implant two artificial lenses! First the main one, and after 4-6 weeks, a second, additional one that reinforces it. This provides super precision! This technique is also ideal for cataract surgery in children, because if their vision changes during growth, it is easier to “update” the additional lens.

Expert statement – Dr. Victor Derhartunian:

“We must remember that choosing a lens is a lifelong investment. That is why we say that ‘Intraocular lenses are as unique and diverse as our patients.’ When a patient comes to us, we analyze their lifestyle: whether they drive a lot at night, whether they work on a computer, or whether they are an avid reader. This allows us to select an implant that will not only solve the problem but also correct existing vision defects and meet their expectations, providing the best possible vision contrast.”

Quick Questions and Answers – FAQ

How long does lens implantation surgery take?Don’t worry, it’s very quick! Usually only 15-20 minutes per eye.

Can an astigmatic person have a multifocal lens?Certainly! We have multifocal toric lenses that address astigmatism and simultaneously give you full sharpness at every distance.

What is this adaptation and how long does it take? The brain needs to learn to use the complex image provided by premium lenses. This process, called neuroadaptation, usually takes one to three months.

Do intraocular lenses age?No! They are made of materials that remain in the eye for life. You do not need to replace them.

Why do I need aspherical lenses instead of spherical ones?Aspherical lenses are better because they correct optical errors, which means the image is less distorted at the edges, and you have better contrast, especially in low light.

Want to know which IOL will transform your vision?Simply schedule a comprehensive qualification examination at Swisslaser.
