It’s stressful. We understand perfectly that your mind is filled with questions – not so much about the procedure itself, but about what comes “after.” Will I be able to see my computer? Will car headlights blind me at night? Will I be searching for glasses all over the house forever? At SwissLaser in Warsaw and Krakow, we understand these concerns like no one else. And we have an answer: EDOF technology. For many of our patients, this solution proves to be the “golden mean” – providing freedom of vision without troublesome side effects.

What will you learn from the text below?

What exactly is EDOF? These are clever lenses with “extended depth of focus.” With them, you see sharply both at distance and at arm’s length (e.g., the dashboard in your car).

How do they differ from popular “multifocals”? Instead of several focal points, EDOF provides one continuous image. No more “jumping” vision or halos around streetlights at night.

Is this solution right for you? If you drive a lot, work at a computer, or play sports – this could be a bullseye.

Will you throw away all your glasses? For driving, sports, and computer work – yes. For threading a needle or reading fine print – they may still come in handy.

How quickly will you adapt? Your brain will love these lenses instantly – full adaptation typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.

What Are EDOF Lenses? A New Generation of Intraocular Implants

EDOF stands for Extended Depth of Focus. In Polish? Rozszerzona Głębia Ostrości. To understand this, think of a standard lens (the kind covered by national health insurance) as a camera fixed rigidly on the horizon. You see the mountains beautifully, but the speedometer in your car is blurred.

Definition and Technology: What Does “Extended Depth of Focus” Mean?

An EDOF lens works completely differently. Thanks to advanced optics, it “stretches” that focal point. It’s as if you adjusted your camera settings so that both what’s a kilometer away and what’s at arm’s length are sharp.

How Does Wavefront Technology Provide a Continuous Range of Vision?

At SwissLaser, we use lenses that manipulate the physics of light (wavefront technology). Sounds like science fiction? In practice, it means that light entering your eye creates one long tunnel of focus. There are no “transition zones” for your vision to stumble over. Your eye glides smoothly from a road sign to your navigation system, and the image remains razor-sharp.

EDOF vs. Classic Multifocal Lenses – Key Differences

Patients often ask us directly: “Doctor, why EDOF and not those multifocal ones?” Both are excellent, both are Premium, but it’s a bit like choosing between a sports car and an SUV – it depends on what you need.

Smooth Transition vs. “Jumps” in Focus – Why Does EDOF Provide a More Natural Image?

Classic multifocal lenses typically have two or three fixed focal points (distance, near, intermediate). Your brain must learn to “switch” between them, which sometimes creates the impression of a slight image jump. EDOF lenses eliminate this problem. They provide a continuous range of vision, so looking through them is simply natural – very similar to how you saw in your youth.

Fewer Light Effects (Halo and Glare) – Advantage in Night Vision

This is the argument that convinces most drivers. Multifocal lenses, due to their structure (those characteristic rings), can cause halos around streetlights at night. With EDOF lenses, this effect is practically absent or minimal.

Dr. Victor Derhartunian explains:

“Listen, EDOF is the answer to the needs of today’s active patient. People come to me wanting freedom from glasses, but they’re afraid that car headlights will blind them at night. EDOF is a brilliant compromise. We give you excellent distance vision and comfort at the computer, while maintaining safety after dark. This technology is very forgiving and allows you to forget about the surgery much faster than other solutions.”

How Will You See After the Procedure? Ranges of Focus in Practice

Let’s be honest and specific. What will your day look like with EDOF lenses?

Distance and Intermediate Ranges (60-100 cm): Ideal for Computer Work and Driving

This is the absolute kingdom of these lenses. Here they have no equal:

Distance (over 1 m): Watching TV, cinema, driving, admiring views – the image is crystal clear.

Intermediate (60-100 cm): Computer screen, dashboard, chopping vegetables in the kitchen, the face of the person you’re talking to. In this zone, EDOF provides incredible comfort. You’ll forget you ever needed glasses for the office.

Near Vision and Reading – Will Glasses Still Be Needed?

Let’s put our cards on the table. EDOF lenses are not designed for “extreme near” vision (i.e., holding your nose in a book).

Smartphone: You’ll read most texts and news without a problem (you may occasionally enlarge the font slightly).

Book/Newspaper: You’ll read the menu in a restaurant. But if you like reading books in bed by dim light or need to read microscopic medication instructions – you may need weak reading glasses (+1.0). Is this a flaw? Rather, it’s the price we pay for the absence of halos at night. And for many, that’s a fair trade.

For Whom Are EDOF Lenses the Best Choice?

There’s no perfect lens for everyone (if there were, we’d only implant one type), but EDOF is incredibly versatile.

Drivers and Physically Active Individuals – Target Groups

If your life is all about movement – cycling, skiing, tennis, golf – EDOF will be a bullseye. It provides excellent distance and contrast assessment. If you’re a professional driver or simply drive a lot after dark – this is your first choice.

Medical Contraindications: Retinal Diseases and Corneal Irregularities

Although this is excellent technology, we don’t implant it “automatically.” If you have advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or your cornea is very irregular, a doctor at SwissLaser will honestly tell you that another solution will be safer for you and provide a better image.

Safety and Adaptation – What to Expect After Surgery?

The procedure itself is brief, but your brain needs a moment to “calibrate.”

Side Effects and Optical Phenomena – Are They Bothersome?

Compared to multifocal lenses, EDOF is very forgiving. Any optical phenomena (slight blurring of light around very bright points) are minimal and you usually stop noticing them faster than you think.

How Quickly Does the Brain Adapt to New Vision? (Adaptation Time)

This is perhaps the biggest advantage of this technology. Neurophysiological adaptation (i.e., the moment when the brain says “okay, this is my new vision”) with EDOF typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Most of our patients forget they had any procedure after just a few days.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Do these lenses ever need to be replaced?

No, they’re made from materials that don’t wear out. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime investment.

Can I work at a computer without glasses?

Absolutely! The 60-100 cm range (i.e., a typical monitor) is the zone where EDOF feels right at home. Most patients work without any aids.

Does the procedure hurt?

No. You’ll receive anesthetic drops. You’re conscious, you talk to the doctor, but you don’t feel pain. The whole thing takes maybe 15-20 minutes.

Why doesn’t everyone get multifocals if they provide better near vision?

Because life is about priorities. Multifocals give better close reading, but you pay for it with worse night vision (halo effect) and longer adaptation. If you prefer safety behind the wheel and comfort at the computer, and accept reading glasses for books – EDOF wins.

I have astigmatism. Will EDOF fix that?

Absolutely! We have toric versions of EDOF lenses. In one go, we remove the cataract, correct distance and intermediate vision, and eliminate astigmatism. Full service.

I recommend EDOF lenses to patients for whom nighttime visual comfort and freedom in daily activities are paramount – this is the most common choice among drivers. In exchange for occasionally reaching for reading glasses for fine print, we get vision that patients describe as the most natural.

Dr. med.
