Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is the method used most frequently with patients that have cataracts, but also for persons who are very nearsighted, farsighted, or with astigmatism.

Through a small incision in the cornea, the natural lens (cloudy with a cataract) is removed, and in its place is put a compatible created artificial lens (acrylate). The selection of the best lens surgery options will be discussed with the patient during the personal consultation along with the optical examination performed by a specialist.

Course of the operation

The lens exchange method called Clear Lens Extraction is quick, about 20 minutes, and is an uncomplicated procedure. The procedure begins by giving the patient a local anesthesia in the form of eye drops.

The following step is the making of a small incision on the edge of the eye. This makes possible the dissolution and aspiration of the natural lens with the aid of a modern and very precise tool (a Swiss phacoemulsification machine produced by OERTLI).

Then a new artificial lens is placed, which is optimally fitted to the patient’s eye with the required vision strength. Thanks to the application of the proper lens, the lens replacement by the Clear Lens Extraction method can also be used to correct astigmatism.

After the surgery, the eye is protected by a band upon the eye which protects from external environmental factors, like dirt and dust, so that the incision may heal well in just a few days.

  • Preparations
The refraction replacement of a lens lasts about 20 minutes and is performed as an out-patient. The patient’s eye is numbed by special eye drops.
  • Incision
The first phase of the procedure begins with a small incision on the edge of the cornea. This makes possible the dissolution and aspiration of the natural lens.
  • Placement of the artificial lens
The next phase of the procedure is the implanting of the new lens, which is optimally matched to the patient’s eye in order to reach the desired final effect. The refractive lens replacement allows also for the correction of problems of astigmatism.
  • Post-operation phase
After the procedure, the patient’s eye is protected with the help of a special flap. This allows for greater safety against external factors like dirt and dust.

Important information

Chances of a successful procedure of lens replacement by the Clear Lens Extraction method are very high, the procedure itself is very reliable. Still there are general risks for surgeries, of which the patient will be informed during the personal visit and conversation.
