Phakic lenses are special lenses made from Collamer material (ILC), which allows the correction of astigmatism and serious vision disorders with diopters above -8 and +3.

Their implantation is made through the use of a scalpel making a small tunneling incision in the cornea and placing it directly on the eye between the iris and the natural lens.

Course of the operation

The first step is the preparation before the operation- washing of the patient’s face using a special cleanser and the giving of eye drops or a shot for local anesthesia and the painless immobilization of the eyelid. The surgeon can then begin making the small tunnel incision on the side of the cornea. He uses a special micro tool for this purpose, which allows for the greatest precision. After making the small incision, he inserts the phakic lens.

In the case of changing the lens, the old ones are soluble and siphoned, and then replaced by artificial counterparts. After the procedure is completed a band is place on the eye, which protects from external factors.

  • Preparation
At the start of the procedure, the entire face is carefully disinfected, and the eye is anesthetized by applying eye drops or an injection near the eye. The eyelids are immobilized. Everything is done without pain.
  • Incision
The edge of the cornea is carefully incised with a precision knife, which allows the further steps of the procedure.
  • Implantation of the artificial lens
The tunnel incision in the cornea allows for the insertion of the phakic lens. The implanted lens corrects the patient’s vision problem with precision.
  • Post procedural phase
After the operation, the eye is protected by a special band, which guards against external factors, like dirt or dust, or other damage. This allows for a more effective process of recovery.

Important information

Sometimes in order to create the so-called bioptics, implantations of artificial lenses are placed by a LASIK operation. In this case, for the purpose of vision correction is the placement of an artificial lens. After about 3 months, LASIK surgery is performed in order to improve the curved vision, correct the astigmatism or residual vision deficits.

Lens implants adapt well and usually have no complications. This is the most performed eye surgery in the world with the treatment of cataracts, widely known as a very safe procedure. An inflamed intraocular occurs in less than 1% of the cases. In this very small risk is included increased pressure of the intraocular (cataract), phenomenon of the halo effect (halos around the source of light, i.e. while driving a car) and glare and a secondary cataract (light blurriness). It is possible to minimalize this earlier or remove after the operation.

Following the operation, it is important to follow the doctor’s orders and plan for drops. Pre-scheduling your follow-up visits is a priority in the process.
