The aim is to restore not only your vision, but above all, your sense of security and control over your own life.

What is Keratoconus? Understanding the Problem

Keratoconus is a progressive, non-inflammatory eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and bulges, taking on a cone shape. This irregular form causes image distortion and thus a significant deterioration of vision. The disease most often develops during adolescence and progresses until around 30 to 40 years of age.

FAQ: Key Questions About Keratoconus Treatment

Does keratoconus mean I will need a transplant?

Absolutely not. Nowadays, thanks to early diagnosis and methods such as Crosslinking and CAIRS, our main goal is precisely to avoid a transplant. The chances of preserving your own cornea are very high.

What does a typical treatment path look like for a newly diagnosed patient?

As our “Roadmap” shows, for most patients with early or moderate keratoconus, the entire treatment (Crosslinking or CXL with laser) takes place in Poland. More complex, multi-stage plans are reserved for advanced cases.

Can keratoconus lead to blindness?

With access to modern treatment, the risk of complete vision loss is negligible. However, untreated, advanced keratoconus can lead to significant visual impairment.

What are the first symptoms of keratoconus?

The most common symptoms are rapidly progressing myopia and astigmatism, blurred vision, double vision (especially when looking with one eye), and a halo effect around light sources.

Is rubbing your eyes harmful?

Yes. In individuals with genetic predispositions, chronic eye rubbing can significantly accelerate the progression of the disease. Avoiding eye rubbing is a key recommendation.

Is the Crosslinking procedure reimbursed by the NFZ (National Health Fund)?

Yes, it is a reimbursed service. However, within the NFZ, the waiting time can be long, and access to the latest technologies and combined treatments (e.g., CXL + laser) is limited.

What is the cost of keratoconus treatment?

The cost depends on the individual treatment plan. During the consultation, you will receive a detailed and transparent cost estimate. We offer convenient installment plans (e.g., 0% interest installments).

Keratoconus and computer work – is it safe?

Yes, working at a computer does not worsen the condition of the cornea. Our goal is to improve the quality of vision so that it becomes fully comfortable again.

Will I need to wear glasses or contact lenses after treatment?

The goal of treatment is to halt the disease and improve vision quality, which often allows for switching from rigid contact lenses to comfortable glasses or soft contact lenses. Complete elimination of the refractive error is possible, but it is not the primary goal.

Is keratoconus a contraindication for standard laser vision correction?

Yes, absolutely. Classic laser vision correction (LASIK, FemtoLASIK) is contraindicated. Only special therapeutic laser procedures (Trans-PRK/PTK) are used.

Is keratoconus hereditary?

Yes, the disease has a genetic basis. If it occurs in close family members, regular check-ups (corneal mapping) are recommended.

What are the alternatives to surgical treatment?

In many cases, rigid, gas-permeable contact lenses are an excellent method of vision correction. Surgical treatment is necessary to halt the progression of the disease (Crosslinking) or is an option for individuals who do not tolerate rigid contact lenses.

I live far from Warsaw/Krakow. How is treatment organized?

We regularly receive patients from all over Poland. Our team will help you plan your visits to be as convenient as possible. Many follow-up appointments can be coordinated in cooperation with your local ophthalmologist.

What is Crosslinking (CXL)?

It is a procedure involving saturating the cornea with vitamin B2, followed by irradiation with UVA rays, which leads to its strengthening and stiffening.

Why choose treatment at Swisslaser?

Because we offer a unique combination of international experience at the highest Swiss level with local care in Poland. We provide access to technologies (CAIRS, Total Corneal Wavefront) that are rare in the country, and the care of one of the most experienced surgeons in this field in Europe.
